Amritsar is the centre of Sikh religion and a major city of Punjab . Amritsar was founded ny Guru Ram Das in 1577. The name Amritsar means Pool of Nectar, referring to the sacred tank around which the Golden Temple is built. Though the city is quite shabby, the golden temple is a beautiful and peaceful centre of the city. The site for golden temple was donated by Akbar, the great. But later Mughal rulers destroyed the premises many times. It is during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh that the temple was restored. The gold plated copper sheets were itched on the building thus making it Golden Temple . These plates were rechanged to original gold in 1999-2000 on occasion of 300 years of establishment of Khalsa panth (Religious Seat)
The Jallianwala Bagh is another great site where hundreds of innocent citizens were killed by General Dyer during British Imperial Rule in 1919.
