Jaisalmer is termed as ' Golden City ' due to golden hue created by stones of fort upon setting sun. Centuries ago, Jaisalmer's strategic position on the camel train routes between India and central Asian brought it great wealth and riches. The merchants and townsmen built magnificent houses and mansions, all exquisitely carved from wood and from golden yellow sandstone. These havelis can be found elsewhere in Rajasthani towns but nowhere are they quite as exotic as in Jaisalmer.
Jaisalmer is known for its golden sands. The tourist can enjoy desert safari and camel rides through fort and its streets. Most travel agents include Jaisalmer on their Rajasthan itinerary.
