Jammu is winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir . It is a beautiful picturesque city with comfortable winter climate. It is a transit point for pilgrims traveling to Vaishno Devi and Amarnath. Buses are available from Jammu to locations all over Jammu and Kashmir .
Jammu is actually two towns, the old town sits on a hilltop overlooking the river. Here you will find most of the hotels, the tourist reception centre and the tourist office, from where deluxe buses depart for Kashmir . Down beside the hill is the station for buses to other parts of north India and for the standard buses to Srinagar.
Several kilometres away across the river is the new town of Jammu Tawi and the main railway station.
