Madurai is the oldest city of southern India . It has been a centre of learning and pilgrimage, for centuries. Mythology suggests, that the divine nectar falling from Lord Shiva's locks, gave the city its name Madhurapuri, commonly called as Madurai . The main attraction of Madurai is Meenakshi temple. Meenakshi Temple attracts pilgrims in millions, from all over India and Abroad. The temple is named after the daughter of a Pandya king who, according to mythology, was born with three breasts. At the time of the birth, the king got divine information that the extra breast would disappear, when she met the man she was supposed to marry, and this happened when she met Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash . Meenakshi Temple is striking example of Dravidian architecture.
Madurai is well connected by road with all major cities in Tamil Nadu. Every South Indian Tour includes Maduari in its itinerary.
