Description

Mysore , located at an altitude of 770 metres, is a popular destination with travelers due to its well kept roads shaded with comforting trees. The Bangalore being the city of next century, Mysore is retained as heritage destination.

Till Independence , Mysore was the seat of the Maharajas of Mysore, known as Wodeyars. The princely state covered about a third of present day Karnataka, and their walled Indo-Saracenic palace is a major attraction. The palace is one of the best maintained palaces in the world. Just south of the city is Chamundi Hill, topped by an important Siva temple. North of the city lies the extensive ruins of the fortress of Srirangapatnam, built by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan on an island in the middle of the Cauvery River . Tipu Sultan fought the last of his major battles with British East India Company here in the closing years of the 18th century. To the east is the beautiful temple of Somnathpur while to the west, below the Krishnaraja Sagar (Dam), are the Brindavan Gardens , a popular attraction with Indian tourists. This garden was used for shooting films of the yesteryears.

Being the centre of major tourist inflow, Mysore is well connected by taxi services. Travel Agents all over India conduct group tours to Mysore .
